Disclaimer: Home buying is very subjective. The criteria for the ‘best vacation home’ is only what I have seen and loved on my travels throughout Maine. I have not received compensation in any way by any of the property owners or real estate agents. I will be posting updated lists regularly as I discover different real estate treasures. (And feel free to contact me if you would like me to take a peek at your house for sale).
If I could pick the perfect place to really get away from it all, THIS one would be it. My dream cabin. Perfect for writing, painting, reading, or communing with nature, this is the perfect cabin to get away. And the best of all? It has indoor plumbing!! If you have looked at all at lakefront real estate in rural Maine, you know that indoor plumbing (well AND septic) can be quite hard to find. There is no electric but brand spanking new solar panels power almost anything that propane doesn’t. It’s quaintly out in the country…. go down the country road, hang a right at the old white farmhouse, go over the little bridge and keep going until you see the sign on the tree. The access road is the only thing that I found a little daunting — about a mile of single lane, dirt road. The cabin itself is delightful and could be used as is, or has great potential with some redecorating. The cabin is about 1000 sq feet with two bedrooms – one first floor and the second a closed loft and the lot is four glorious lake-front acres. From the pier – yes, it comes with a pier! – you can see a tiny island off to the right and not another house seemingly for miles. There is a wood stove for chillier seasons, although I’m assuming that it could only be accessed in winter weather via snowmobile. This gem is available for $129,000 offered by United Country – Bold Coast Realty.
The former Dr. Larson’s cottage in Bucks Harbor is the quintessential Maine cottage. This small cottage is basically brand new (the former, antique Cape burned down in 2009) and is full of modern amenities like a first floor laundry, cathedral ceilings and large windows. And did I mention water views from THREE sides? Spending time here is a treat — aways something to watch — the fishing boats going out at dawn and back in the afternoon with the days’ catch. And just stroll down the road to buy lobsters for dinner! The property also comes with a boathouse and a recreational use boat launch. The house is offered basically turn-key with tasteful furnishings – there is nothing to do but unpack your suitcase and, voila!, instant vacation house. Dr. Larson’s cottage and boathouse is available for $169,000 – it has two bedrooms/ 1 1/2 baths – a first floor bedroom with a generous closet and and open master loft with half bath upstairs. Do you have dreams of what a summer vacation should be like? Does it include salty breezes blowing through open windows and an endless view out over the water? If so, this nostalgic cottage in Roque Bluffs is the house for you. This farmhouse features panoramic views out over the ocean. Sit on your porch and enjoy the view all day long or stroll just down the street to the beaches and walking trails of the state park. This part of Roque Bluffs is a close knit group of mostly summer cottages and really has the feel of community and neighborliness smack in the middle of a glorious location — Roque Bluffs State Park. Although the farmhouse doesn’t feature the openness that new construction usually does, it has the nooks and crannies and features that are hard to replicate today (if you view it, check out the spice racks). The gem of this house is the master bedroom — except I don’t know if anyone would ever want to get out of bed here with this view! The farmhouse has 3 bedrooms, a wonderful deck and a glassed in 3-season porch (with a water view, of course). Also offered by The Christopher Group.
